SUMMER 2020

EXPRESSIONS

The height of pandemic brought many questions about how to evolve self-expression to better reflect our personalities and use of language in digital spaces.

We explored a wide gamut of touch points: everything from reimagining message threads, to digital jewelry, and AR fashion.

Leveraging avatars

Given how large smart phone screens are, there is unused visual real estate that could serve both communicative and delightful functions.

CORE FUNCTION

We utilized the front-facing camera to capture live facial reactions and express that in an avatar above the text thread.

We wanted to reintroduce the emotions that are removed by the text medium.

Communal spaces

Digitally connection was top of mind during the Pandemic. Taking influences from apps like Clubhouse, we wanted to create digital spaces for group message threads akin to feeling like an in-person hangout.

Live spaces transform standard message threads into interactive spaces.

Avatar animations allow for more expressive communication.

Visual effects accentuate user emotional states for more playful and richer communication.

Spatial audio allows for a more immersive experience as users move throughout the space.

Leveraging smaller screens

We did a short ideation sprint for how these expressive experiences could translate to the Galaxy Z Flip’s cover screen.

Tamagotchi-like pets help you focus on a task.

Avatars indicate who messaged you, and with sentiment.

Flip’s form factor was perfect for a AR makeup effects applicator.

Digital jewelry

Samsung is an excellent screen maker. It made sense to pack that amazing technology into common jewelry pieces to give people more opportunities to express their digital personalities in the real world.

AR expressions

On a quirkier note, we also explored how expression could evolve in an AR/XR environment.

People can broadcast their interests in AR to lessen social intertia and promote connection.

RECAP

PROBLEM

How can One UI not only have a warmer presence, but also utilize various sensors in the device to grant people more emotional expression in their day-to-day conversations?

Research

A Dscout study with participants uncovered that people wanted more ways to express emotions that gifs and emojis couldn’t provide.

Impact

Dramatic impact on shifting Samsung’s cultural mindset on the importance of warmth and joy within UX design.

Influenced the marketing and design strategy of the Galaxy Z. Flip and its focus on Gen Z
